TDD Is Dead
Testing is no longer something you front-load. It's something you run after a feature has proven it deserves to exist.
Steve Jobs liked to say that people don't know what they want until you show it to them. But the showing part was always expensive. Building was slow. Testing was slower. You had to commit early to a path because you couldn't afford to explore five.
That was in the "before times." Before Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, etc. Now you can prototype five approaches to a feature, kill four, try five more variations on the survivor, over and over again—all before lunch. You can build something, use it yourself, notice what feels wrong, rebuild it, and iterate until it clicks. Then put it in front of users and see what resonates. Feature evolution on steroids.
This is the creative work that actually determines whether anyone uses what you ship. And it's only possible because the drudgery side—quality control—can be largely automated now.
How Testing Changed
Claude Code, Codex, and similar tools can sweep a codebase and generate unit, integration, and e2e tests systematically—every branch, every error path. They find gaps you wouldn't have thought to cover by hand. It takes minutes, not hours, and the coverage is broader and deeper than what most developers produce manually.
Build with basic coverage. Validate the idea. Then sweep for deep coverage once it's earned its place. Harden what matters. Skip what doesn't.
Why TDD Is Dead
Test Driven Development was always a compromise. You traded speed for rigor—writing tests before code so you'd catch mistakes early. That made sense when building was slow and iteration was costly.
It doesn't anymore. TDD front-loaded engineering rigor on features that might get cut next sprint—prioritizing correctness for code that hadn't earned it yet. The inverse of what you actually want: the freedom to explore fast and harden later.
The engineers who thrive now are the ones who automate quality and spend their freed-up time on the hard problem—figuring out what's worth building in the first place.
